Toscano

Let me first start by saying thank you to Chris Aversa for being a stud and taking his date to Toscano in Beacon Hill, otherwise I wouldn’t have known it was such a winner! Restaurant Week began Sunday night as did my 1st of 4 reservations I have this season. Aaaand we’re off!

Bread: Four small focaccia pieces and four rustic Italian loaf pieces were covered by a cloth napkin in a small basket, served with a bottle of EVOO. I didn’t try the focaccia but the Italian loaf was excellent. If it wasn’t for the 3 courses coming my way I would have had seconds.

Menu: Toscano provided 6 options each for Starters and Entrees and 4 options for dessert; this was a treat considering some restaurants only have 2-3 options per course. I really wanted to try the tomato bread soup and the Mediterranean Sea Bass but opted for the selections below. My dessert choice wasn’t an issue…

Food/Presentation:
Caprese – imported bufala mozzarella, beefsteak tomatoes, basil
Three slices of fresh beefsteak tomatoes were each topped with a thick slice of buffalo mozzarella and sprinkled with slices of basil. Besides the lack of basil – I expect at least a full leaf per slice of mozz – it was a great start to the meal.

Orecchiette Vitello – ground veal, mushrooms, tomato
The four of us were pretty bummed there wasn’t a pasta option in the entrée section of the Restaurant Week menu. The regular menu had plenty to choose from, so in order to get our fix Benno ordered a full serving of the orecchiette for in between the 1st and 2nd course. The Bolognese/ragu type of sauce was great and the pasta was cooked just right; I enjoyed it so much I didn’t even notice the mushrooms!

Salome Asparagi – grilled atlantic salmon, asparagus, mustard sauce
A perfect portion of fish was served with 3 stalks of asparagus and a side of mustard sauce. I was surprised/happy the sauce wasn’t drizzled on b/c I love my mustard and was pleased I was able to dip each bite. The asparagus was cooked well, I just wish there were a couple more pieces.

Tiramisu – Toscano House Specialty “Budino Style”
We made sure to ask about this “Budino Style” before ordering and the waitress said it wasn’t a typical square piece of tiramisu with layers of lady fingers, mascarpone, etc. It was served in a martini glass and seemed as though a normal piece of tiramisu had been balled up into the size of a generous ice cream scoop. It was an unbelievable take on the traditional dessert, like a tiramisu ice cream pudding medley!

tiramisu

NOTE: Two apps I didn’t mention were the Polpettini Fiorentina(veal/beer/pork meatballs) and the Rigatoni Toscano (with double smoked bacon, tomato cream and herbs). I’m extremely picky about meatballs and these honestly tasted like the could have been from my Gram’s kitchen. The rigatoni dish tasted like bacon had been pureed into the sauce – I don’t like bacon and therefore I didn’t love the flavor but I respected that it was delicious and well created.

Service: Really excellent service. Our waitress was helpful in choosing wine and gave us a couple ordering options when we told her we were craving pasta. Each course was delivered to each of us at the same, plates were warm as they should be (trick I learned from Benno!), water glasses we refilled, and wine was poured as our glasses were emptying. They also fold the napkins into a little spiral design when you get up from your seat… top notch!

Overall: The atmosphere suggests “finer” dining with the white linens, pricey wine list, and stellar service. The Restaurant Week menu had plenty to offer, and their regular menu was almost overwhelming (in a good way) with Antipasti, Zuppa, Insalata, Pizza, Formaggi, Pasta, Risotto, Carni, and Contorni. Their pastas come in ½ portions which I love. Prices are moderate, but the meat entrees are as high as $36. I’ve seen worse!

The Perfect Bite: The pasta dishes definitely stole the show, but that tiramisu… oh Madonna mia! I have to give props when a chef can take a traditional preparation style and switch it up to make it taste even better.

Via Matta

I’ve been to Via Matta once or twice before, quite some time ago. I knew it was classy and had great food but just couldn’t remember much else about it, or more importantly, what I had ordered. Thanks to Groupon/BuyWithMe/whatever coupon Erin & I purchased, we essentially received $50 off our meal which was a great start.

Bread: It didn’t come to our table until moments after our appetizers were served. I was starving and pretty annoyed, but the bread runner apologized repeatedly. Luckily it was delicious; great, hearty, fresh bread served with a side plate of EVOO.

bread

Menu: Quite an extensive menu with 18 Antipasti options and 16 dinner options between Pasta and Secondi Piatti. I casually skimmed the online menu in the days leading up to dinner and noticed they had a Bolognese dish. I honestly hoped that my favorite meal wouldn’t appear on the menu come dinner night b/c I become weak in the knees at the sight of “bolognese” and never want to order anything else! I desperately wanted to try the Agnolotti with Maine crab, avocado, and cherry tomatoes and was stressing every second up until I had to make my decision…

Food/Presentation:
Warm Shrimp with spicy watermelon, pancetta, avocado and basil
I normally do not enjoy shrimp but there have been a couple of shrimp dishes in the past that have changed my mind, and I can now add this app to the list! The watermelon had just a bit of spice, I love avocados in/on/with anything, and basil is my favorite herb. Really tasty and refreshing.

apps

apps

Crispy Meatballs with spicy tomato-basil sauce
I’m really picky when it comes to meatballs since I grew up eating Gram and Dad’s homemade ones. But I have no complaints here; crispy outside, soft on the inside.

Tagliatelle alla Bolognese
At first sight it appeared perfect: massive amounts of meat with a nice tomato sauce. Don’t get me wrong, the dish was really great and I just about finished the whole damn thing, but the noodles were too soft for my liking. I prefer an al dente pasta and this seemed almost like an egg noodle. Other than that, I really did enjoy it.

Bathroom: The restroom has a few stalls, 2 sinks, with clean and shiny walls and countertops. The giant tissues boxes threw me for a loop b/c I assumed they were in fact tissues and spent more time than I would have liked searching for the paper towels! Quite tricky…

bathroom

bathroom

Service: It took way too long to get our drinks and the bread came after the apps which is a big no-no. But after actually speaking with our waitress she was really helpful when we were deciding what dishes to order. Another gentlemen helped us later in the evening when Erin asked if she could order ½ of a dessert (just the cherry gelato) to go. We had a laugh with the guy since it was a bit of an odd request. But he was hilarious and more than accommodating, and even provided her with a real spoon so she could eat it in the car!

Overall: The food was really excellent. Matt & Rany devoured their meals (they both got the homemade Chitarra with rabbit, morels, asparagus and parm). I would consider Via Matta more of an upscale/fine dining experience, with entrees ranging from $18-$34 and apps running $10-$18. I recommend it and would not hesitate to go back, esp. if someone else is paying! 😉

The Perfect Bite: I have honestly been dreaming of what could have been had I ordered the Agnolotti. I love each and every component of that dish but the damn Bolognese won me over again. It was great, but I just wasn’t crazy about the noodle consistency. So believe it or not, I’ll go with: shrimp, spicy watermelon, avocado.

www.viamattarestaurant.com

UPDATE:
I went back to try the Agnolotti dish and oh my goodness… one of my favorite meals in all of Boston! I could have used a couple more actual pieces of Agnolotti, but the stuffed ricotta/avocado mix was smooth and creamy as can be, the crab was sprinkled throughout the dish and there was something about that tomato sauce that was unreal. Loved it!

Island Creek Oyster Bar

Being a sister restaurant of Eastern Standard (a couple of doors down in Kenmore Sq) and Lineage (on Harvard St. in Brookline) I had high hopes for Island Creek Oyster Bar. I’m not necessarily a fan of raw bars, which Island Creek does well, but I do love seafood (and food in general). Perfect place to try for a Father’s Day dinner before heading to a Sox game 🙂

Bread: We received a small wooden basket with 5 slices of bread. Soft, fresh and delicious, but the real star was the butter which was mixed with honey, cayenne pepper, and sea salt!

bread & butter

bread & butter

Menu: The menu is changed and printed daily which I love because you’ll always be presented with different options. Unfold the menu once to find the Raw Bar options complete with names of the fishermen who caught the goods, unfold once more to find the apps, salads, fish, meat and more. I originally wanted the lobster roll, and this would probably be a great place to try one, but my game time decision led me to an app and a salad.

Food/Presentation:
Yellowfin Tuna Tartar: cucumber, sesame, chive
The tuna was served in the middle of a large plate sprinkled with chives, accompanied by a bowl of homemade crispy chips; an old recycled menu acted as a doily. Some of the chips I placed on the plate to show how decorative they were! In terms of presentation I wish this all came on one appropriately sized plate (the table just wasn’t big spacious enough), but taste wise I have no complaints. The tuna was in chunks which I like, and the portion was a respectable appetizer size.

WestportGreens: marinated avocado, radish, spiced corn vinaigrette
The greens were tossed with the dressing and radishes, covering the sliced avocado. A simple salad in ingredients and light and refreshing in taste.

Bathroom: It’s not really fair to judge this bathroom as it was located outside of the actual restaurant in the Hotel Commonwealth. But, it was clean with earth toned hues, and had 2 of those cool hand dryers where you slowly draw your hands in and out…

bathroom

bathroom

Service: From the server who poured our water, to our waitress, to the guy that cleared our plates, everyone was pleasant and friendly. Our waitress allowed me to try the wine before actually ordering (which I’m seeing a trend of lately – is that fueled by my indecisivness or their hospitality?), and while my dad was in the restroom the plate clearer chatted me up about the Sox since we were on our way to a game. It’s nice when you can have a real conversation with the staff.

Overall: Not only did they have a regular bar but also a separate actual raw bar where you could sit overlooking the raw food items. I wasn’t too adventurous with my dinner selections but I enjoyed both plates. My dad really liked his raw bar choices and the skate entrée. Next time I’m craving a lobster roll I’ll be sure to stop by!

The Perfect Bite: The bread & butter was one of the best combos I’ve recently had, but the tuna tartar and homemade chips were my bite of choice.

G’Vanni’s

Thank you to Groupon, BuyWithMe, Eversave etc  for enticing me with discounted offers that I have no business buying but convince myself I need to purchase b/c it’s “such a great deal!”. I try to only buy the coupons that I “need” but often splurge on restaurant or massage offers. G’Vanni’s popped up in the email one day and since it was a restaurant I had never been to, I figured I’d give it a shot.

Bread: Served in a basket were two baguettes each sliced into at least 4 pieces. The bread was warm, doughy, and was delicious dipped in EVOO.

bread

bread

Menu: Antipasti, Entrees, Chicken, Veal, Seafood, Pizza, Hearty Healthy & Wholesome. The options were endless but I was pretty set on ordering pasta and hadn’t had a winning Bolognese in a while.

Food/Presentation:
Mozzarella Salad: fresh mozzarella, tomato, red onion, greens
Three thick pieces of mozzarella topped three slices of tomato over a mixed greens salad. I had to drizzle on EVOO and balsamic as the salad was dry. Not bad overall, but I was hoping basil would be involved somehow.

Tuscan Fusilli Bolognese: tenderloin, carrots, celery, onions, homemade fusilli with our Boston Red Sauce
I’ve found that no two Bolognese pastas are alike and I have yet to come across a Bolognese that I didn’t like… until now. This is ½ my fault, ½ the waiter’s. When I saw “tenderloin” in the description I was skeptical but when I asked how this “Tuscan Bolognese” differed from the “Rigatoni Bolognese” all the waiter said was that the Tuscan Bolognese consisted of a homemade pasta. I decided to go for it and was extremely disappointed. Typically a Bolognese has ground up meat, not chunks of steak. Very strange. The pasta itself was good, as was the red sauce, but the big pieces of tenderloin were inappropriate and upsetting.

Bathroom: So small I couldn’t even take a picture inside b/c I would inevitably be seen as there is a mirror above the sink and a full length on the back on the door. Good thing I’m a small person…

Service: We arrived for our 7pm reservation around 7:05pm and were told it would be a wait. “Even though we have a reservation?” I say. “Oh yes” says the frantic manager. There were 4 other parties waiting outside in the rain (who also had reservations) b/c the interior is too small to hold anyone that’s not seated at a table. The manager apologized and promised we’d eventually be seated so I played it cool and didn’t give him a hard time. His excuse was something about all of the “BuyWithMe coupons” and whoever took the reservations “didn’t space them out appropriately”, blahblah. Shouldn’t you know how to regulate and manage the reservations?
We were seated around 7:30pm, not a terrible wait considering the panic the manager was in. Our appetizers were served in a timely manner but I think we waited about an hour between the apps and the entrees. The only apology we received was from the waiter, saying “I’m sorry, our chef is really slow tonight, your meals should be out soon”, and then we proceeded to wait a ½ an hour after that comment. Completely unacceptable.

Overall: Mike and Sophie enjoyed their meals, but Matt & I were both disappointed. His tortelloni with salmon was too salty and I don’t ever want to think about that Bolognese again. The service was horrific and b/c of that alone I would urge you to think twice about G’Vanni’s. Perhaps it’s better during a calmer time period, but they need to learn how to handle their mistakes professionally.

The Perfect Bite: I’d eat that whole basket of warm bread dipped in EVOO.

5 Napkin Burger

view from the bar

view from the bar

I adore burgers and haven’t been blown away by one in quite some time. I’ve been told I need to visit R.F O’Sullivan’s in Somerville as well as Mr. Bartley’s in Cambridge, but I live in Brighton and don’t cross the river too often. So thank goodness for 5 Napkin Burger, a must-eat for burger lovers, located on Huntington Ave (with access via the street and the Prudential Center).

Bread: We were not served bread, which at a burger place is fine by me. I had plenty of other delicious options to fill my stomach with.

Menu: Starters (ranging from soup to salads to wings to deep-fried pickles!), Sushi Maki Rolls, Burgers, Salads, Entrees, Sides, Shakes. I had a burger mentality coming into dinner so my eyes went right to the beef.

Food/Presentation:
Stack of Cornmeal Crusted Onion Rings: blue cheese dressing & 5N sauce
I’m not one to order onion rings (I was eating with 3 boys) but I’m glad I got to taste them! Really fantastic, especially in the 5N sauce (which I believe is a chipotle aioli).

onion rings

Sushi Special: spicy tuna, avocado, king crab salad, torched scallop, sriracha chili sauce, eel sauce, cilantro
Burgers and sushi? Why not! 2 of my favorite things come together and I was very pleased. This special was excellent, so light and fresh. There are a couple other sushi options I would like to try (Southwest Roll), although it is a tad pricey, ranging from $10.95-$15.95. If they all come with 8 pieces it’s perfect to split with a friend!

Original 5 Napkin Burger: 10 oz. fresh ground chuck, gruyere cheese, caramelized onions, rosemary aioli, soft white roll
Simple and scrumptious. The cheese melting technique was ideal, covering the top as well as the sides of the burger. I spread a bit of the rosemary aioli on the top bun then discarded the rest (it’s really just flavored mayo, let’s be honest). We all ordered the burgers to be done differently (well done, medium, medium rare) and each came out cooked perfection. Definitely a success.

Espresso Brownie Sunday: vanilla ice cream, espresso caramel, whipped cream & salted peanut
I could have had a giant bowl of the whipped cream, espresso caramel & salted peanuts and I would have been a happy girl. Vanilla ice cream is a waste of my time, and brownie sundaes aren’t my first choice, but this was really good.

Banana Bread Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting
This was the dessert special and I wasn’t super impressed mainly b/c it was too rich. I do love banana bread but the frosting was unnecessary for me.

Bathroom: Spacious, sleek, clean, 5 stalls, with a full length mirror. I like how the stalls were somewhat separate from the sinks.

bathroom

Wait Staff: I forget her name but the (single) boys were smitten. She was super cute and friendly, and totally sold us on the sushi and dessert special. She did a great job, however we ordered the sushi and onion rings as an app and our burgers were brought by food runners directly after the rings, before we even saw the sushi. Not a huge deal – we had the sushi with our burgers which actually was a nice balance – but apps should be delivered before the entrée, always.

decor

Overall: I consider myself a burger fanatic and I highly suggest 5 Napkin Burger, for burgers or sushi! Everything was honestly superb; my only issue is I wish there were more options. They have a great burger variety (beef, veggie, ‘inside out’, turkey, tuna, lamb) but I wish there were more interesting toppings, for instance: spicy mustard, avocado, relish, hummus etc. The Special Burger had a salsa topping which they should take inspiration from.
The bar was spacious with enough TVs to catch a game. The walls were adorned with over-sized chalk boards and bottles that looked like they should hold some kind of magic potion.

The Perfect Bite: 5 Napkin Burger smeared with a little bit of ketchup. The rosemary aioli was decent, but I would have preferred the 5N sauce.

Umbria Prime

umbria

umbria

Umbria Prime is a high-end steak house located in the heart of the Financial District on Franklin Street, blocks away from Post Office Square. Not only does it offer corn and grass-fed certified Angus beef, but the menu also features seafood, salads, and artisan pastas. Show up late night and the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors transform into a night club for the 25+ crowd. I don’t know that I’m ready for that just yet, but I was looking forward to a good meal.

Bread: I guess I’ll call these popovers? Reminds me of a pastry you’d receive at brunch. The bottom was quite thin and useless, but the top was soft and doughy, great with a bit of butter spread.

bread

Menu: Signature Appetizers, Soups & Salads, Umbria’s Artisanal Pasta, Dry-Aged Prime Steaks and Chops, From the Sea, On the Side, Sauces. I originally wanted to order steak (hello, I’m at a steakhouse!) but the prices threw me for a loop, with the cheapest steak being $36. I was do for a ragu anyways…

Food/Presentation:
Imported Buffalo Mozzarella: tomatoes and basil
Slices of fresh tomato alternated with slices of buffalo mozzarella to create a Caprese tower. Basil leaves were off to the side and a basil pesto was drizzled for dipping. Honestly one of the best Caprese salads I’ve had, mainly because of the soft, fresh mozzarella.

caprese

caprese

Pappardelle: braised wild boar ragu
I’m still confused… The above description is exactly what I read off the menu, yet I received a pasta dish covered in mushrooms! I thought at first ‘maybe I was served the Tagliatelle’ which comes with “exotic wild mushrooms and fresh truffle shavings”, but then overheard our waitress describing that entrée to the table next to us and she mentioned it came with a red tomato sauce. There were no tomatoes in sight on my plate so I assume I received the correct meal. Unfortunately I’m not a big mushroom fan but have recently developed a tolerance for the fungi, so I was able to somewhat enjoy it. A ‘shroom lover would have been in heaven – it’s a shame I was deceived by the menu!

Tiramisu
When I made the reservation via OpenTable.com I mentioned Matt & I were celebrating our 4 year anniversary, hence the note in raspberry sauce. The lady fingers were perfectly soaked in espresso, my favorite part! Matt’s a tough critic when it comes to tiramisu and he fully enjoyed the few bites I allowed him 🙂

tiramisu

Bathroom: Located outside of the main restaurant in the foyer of the back entrance. Nothing special; for an upscale restaurant I would have expected something more stylized/fancy. Not a fan of the rolls of toilet paper on display.

bathroom

Wait Staff: Our waitress was great and offered to let me try a couple of wines when I couldn’t make up my mind. She was attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly!

Overall: Definitely more of a fancier/upscale restaurant with its white linens and wait staff suited in crisp, white button downs and ties. Being in the financial district I can only assume it attracts a lot of business executives, but as it was the Friday before Memorial Day weekend there were only 3 other tables occupied. The portions are large – Matt’s tuna steak was double anything we’ve ever seen – but so are the prices. We chose Umbria strictly because we had a $100 gift card 🙂  Thanks mom!

The Perfect Bite: Mozzarella, tomato, basil – hands down! I’d say it was solely the mozz, but this Italian girl adores her Caprese salads.

"the bald man" | Passion Fruit Mojito

Max Brenner might as well be referred to as the Willy Wonka of the Back Bay. One step inside this new restaurant and you’d swear they were pumping cocoa powder through the air ducts. The hostess mentioned this was not the case – the aroma was in fact coming from the chocolate shop in front of the dining area. Full of gourmet chocolate sweets & treats as well as chocolate infused lotions & soaps, I was like a kid in a candy store (literally). But alas, real food awaits and we were led through the circular room to our table. “Chocolate by the Bald Man” was everywhere you turned, in candy dispensers surrounding the diners, in the center of the room in glass containers, inticing you every step of the way.

center of the restaurant

Bread: I was so excited to be surrounded by chocolate that I just now noticed that we didn’t receive bread!! Weird, I always notice when food is missing…

Menu: We were presented with 2 menus, one being the dinner & drinks menu and the other a dessert/dessert drinks menu, both of which are overwhelming in a good why. “First Food Then Chocolate” as their slogan goes… the dinner menu consisted of sections such as: Rise & Shine, Slider Bar, Things to Dip, Crispy & Delicious, Food on a Stick, Max’s Pizzas, Tossed Around, For Your Hands, With a Knife and Fork, Entertaining Side Dishes. I was in a sandwich kind of mood, had 3 in mind, and our waiter encouraged me towards the tuna salad sandwich.

Food/Presentation:
The Unforgettable Spicy Tuna Salad Sandwich – tomato, lettuce, pickled jalapenos, crushed bbq chips brushed with cilantro & avocado mayo
My sandwich was cut in half and separated on a wooden slab by cocoa & chili powder dusted waffle fries, chipotle aioli, and dill pickles. I was very pleased to see there were only 5 or so fries in the small glass. The brioche bun of the sandwich was soft and buttery, the tuna was well dressed (not too much mayo), but it wasn’t as spicy as I was expecting. I also didn’t notice the BBQ chips – I think they were mixed in with the tuna salad rather than placed on top as a condiment. I nitpick, but it was definitely delicious!

Milk Chocolate Apple Caramel Crisp – oatmeal streusel, toffee ice cream, pure melted cinnamon chocolate
Straight from the laboratory! Served on a graph paper glass dish with a small cup of toffee ice cream, a beaker of extra toffee sauce, and a cast iron pot of warm apple crisp. The crisp itself was more of a hard crust which was tasty, but the apples themselves weren’t great (too mushy for my liking). If you dig, there’s a chocolate surprising underneath the apples which added an extra richness.

dessert

Bathroom: Lights! Lights would be good here! The bathroom was so dark I couldn’t even take a picture (I use my ancient iPhone 3G without a flash). Small, with three stalls, and matching floor & wall patterned tiles. The mirror told me “You Look Extremely Good Today” (written on the bottom) and I wasn’t about to argue.

Wait Staff: Shayne was fantastic. He was excited this was our first time in the restaurant and made it clear that he would be available and willing to follow through with any request we had (including charging my cell phone in a back room so that I could take pictures of my entrée!). Genuine and very accommodating!

Overall: A fun and interesting new addition to Boylston Street! Prices aren’t outrageous, multiple food options are available, atmosphere is quirky and delicious (in sight & smell). A great spot for just dessert (Chocolate Surprise Tiramisu is next), hot chocolate on a chilly day (the options are endless & amazing), or a post-dinner coffee (Baileys cappuccino).
We received our check in a tin expressing “Money For Life, Chocolate For The Soul”. Inside I was expecting some type of after-dinner mint/chocolate, but to no avail! Why have a decorative tin with only the bill inside? A bit disappointing, considering we were surrounded by dozens of little chocolate treats.

Papagayo

This was my first visit to Papagayo which came highly recommended from my friend Dave who frequents there often. For someone like me who lives in Brighton and works in Back Bay, the location isn’t the easiest to get to via public transit, but there are plenty of metered parking spots if you’re going with a DD. The restaurant is large, spacious, and has a long bar backed by 100s of tequilas!

Bread:  Chips & salsa of course! The chips were oiled and salted to perfection and the salsa had just enough spice.

chips, salsa, guac
chips, salsa, guac

Menu: I’ve never taken a Spanish class a day in my life so please don’t think I’m undermining you with the subtitles: Antojitos (apps), Taquizas (tacos), Platos Fuertes (popular dishes), Ensaladas Y Sopas (salads & soups), Especiales de la Casa (house specials), Tortas Y Burgezas (sandwich served on house baked bread with chili dusted fries). Obviously we were ordering guacamole as an appetizer, so I tried to stick to a smaller entrée by ordering a taco salad (too bad I wasn’t aware of the large portion size!).

Food/Presentation:
Table Side Guacamole – hand hacked haas avocado
The great thing about table side guacamole is that it’s fresh, home-made, and customizable! The guac maker asked how spicy we wanted it (mild, medium, or hot) and you can add carrots and celery for $1 extra.

Tostada Grande – choice of chicken tinga or muchaka with black beans, tomato, jack & cheddar cheeses
I went with the muchaka and was pleasantly surprised that it was in a pulled beef style rather than ground beef. The meat came topped with the salad components in a giant crispy tortilla shell. The salad was great, the meat being my favorite part, but it was way too big for me to finish. My only disappointment is that I had to add sliced avocado (shouldn’t that have been included in the first place?).

If you’re a tequila fan I recommend this adult dessert. They’re a perfect little size and the flavors change daily. Featured below: pineapple, prickly pear, watermelon, and mango .. served with 4 tiny spoons!

Bathroom: Besides the trash can overflowing with dirty paper towels, the restroom was sleek and clean. I liked the dark wood paneling and the lighting on the mirrors. The full length mirror was a plus but there were only 2 stalls which caused for congestion and lines.

Wait Staff: I absolutely loved our waitress. She was joking around with us all night, the food service was in a timely fashion, and she encouraged us to get the signature margarita snow cones (which sounded like a great idea at the time but unfortunately helped lead to my demise). Being a new establishment, the manager came over to see how our evening was going and we had no complaints!

Overall: I tried to be a big girl and drink tequila like a real man, but let’s just say I will not be joining their Tequila Club (join the club, drink 100 different tequilas in 1 year and receive a dinner for 10!). The food was great and reasonably priced. The drinks I had were excellent, although I think I had one too many (red sangria, strawberry orange margarita, Patron XO Espresso martini – terrible combo). I was expecting it to be more crowded on a Saturday night (the manager said the bar is usually 3 people deep). A casual and growingly popular alternative for a Mexican restaurant!

Lolita

Located on Dartmouth Street in Paparazzi’s old location, it’s easy to pass right by Lolita’s small and modest entrance. However once you walk inside you are undoubtedly in Back Bay’s newest and trendiest Mexican ‘cocina & tequila bar’. The long main bar is constantly 2-3 people deep and the back lounge/bar – fit with sofas, chairs, and stools – tends to fill up as the night goes on. I had been twice before for drinks and apps and was excited to dive into their extensive menu.

Bread:  In replacement of the bread basket we were of course served chips with 4 different salsas – 3 served together on a square plate and the other brought in a bottle. I wish we had been warned about the queso-looking dip in the center – it was not a typical cheese queso as it was insanely hot! My mouth was on fire longer than I would have liked, but I was pleased with the variety of accompaniments.

Menu: Primero, Tacos, Sopa & Ensalada, Quesadillas, Tres Ceviches, Enchiladas, Vertical Nachos, Principal, Sancho (sides), Guacamole. Quite the selections to choose from! I basically wanted something from almost every section. I knew we’d be ordering guacamole, so I bypassed my craving for the Tortilla Soup and just ordered the Pulled Pork Tacos.

Food/Presentation: We were first brought an aperitif: a small steaming bowl of grapefruit pieces, topped with tequila and 4 tiny spoons. I had a taste but it was taken away before we could enjoy the whole thing!

Fresco Guacamole: fresh avocado, tomato, serrano chile, diced onion & cilantro

Pulled Pork Tacos: seared crispy with salsa verde
Three soft shelled tacos were served filled with pork and grilled red peppers. The meal was great but I was expecting “pulled pork” as the menu stated, and as you can see from the photo these were pieces/chunks of pork which is very different. Slightly disappointed…

Bananarama: crisp fried banana-caramel cheesecake burritos with deep chocolate ice cream, butterscotch sauce, and pecan brittle
We so did not need dessert, but in the spirit of Ariane’s birthday we had no choice 🙂 I didn’t exactly get a sense of “cheesecake” in this dessert, but these burritos were right up my alley. Crispy and FULL of banana, I could have had this all to myself.

Buenas Notes: warm deep chocolate-espresso bread pudding with coffee ice cream, brown sugar caramel, and hot fudge sauce
The “bread pudding” had more of a brownie texture but it was still incredible, especially with that coffee ice cream. Heavy and filling, thank goodness there were 4 of us!

Sour Apple Cotton Candy with Cherry Pop-Rocks
Like we needed more sweets! In my previous Lolita experiences I remember eyeing the cotton candy I’d seen making it’s way from table to table. At first I thought it was a dessert option but I quickly learned it was complimentary – Lolita’s version of an after-dinner mint, served before we were given the check. I was delighted but noticed that many other tables left this large portion to go to waste.

Bathroom: In keeping with the dark, red, gothic theme, the bathroom has printed wallpaper, 3 individual black sinks, black shutter doors on each of the 5 stalls. Pardon my photo of the toilet, but how can you NOT take a picture of that crazy paisley print? A bit small for this constantly crowded establishment (the stalls are directly behind the sinks), but the full length mirror and the facecloth ‘napkins’ adds points.

Wait Staff: When we arrived we were told the wait was 30-45mins. When we checked back in 45 mins later we were told we were going to have to wait another 45 mins. My friend explained to them “No thank you. You told us that 45 mins ago!” so they tippity-tapped their fancy Reservations App on their iPad and assured us it would only be another 25 mins. Ugh, they’re lucky they can provide delicious sangria to keep me company.
Our waiter was “pissy” to start off the night, not making eye contact and acting like he didn’t give a damn. We were about to write him off but he later apologized for his mood and started acting more playful/friendly – we ended the night adoring him!

Overall: Trendy. Dark. Swanky. Gothic. Or if you’re Ariane you refer to it as a “vampire den”. Whatever you want to call it, you’re not going to Lolita for a quiet casual evening. The place is constantly packed so make a reservation if you plan on eating (only allowed if you have a party of 6 or more – annoying). I’m not a tequila fan so I avoided the 7 margarita options, but the Rojo Sangria is excellent (although one of the cheaper cocktails at $9). There’s plenty of food I still want to try so I’ll be back in the future, although it strikes me more as a winter spot considering there’s no windows or sunlight of any kind!

The Perfect Bite: The guac was excellent but I think (almost) every guacamole is amazing. My entrée was good but the menu lied to me making me believe I’d be served PULLED pork… so I’ll have to say the Bananarama dessert.

Mamma Maria

Final stop for Restaurant Week is Mamma Maria in the North End’s North Square. I read some good reviews and knew it was a little pricey which made it perfect for R.W.’s $33.11 deal. The dining room is small with about 9 tables. Floor to ceiling windows provide a view of the peaceful North Square. We were seated at a table of 4 and I immediately noticed the chair covers (suggests a fancier environment) and the napkin rings (a home-y accent piece). There seemed to be a mix of casual and formal decorations which made me feel alright about wearing jeans.

Bread:  About 7 slices were served in a long basket with a side of pesto and olives. I love seeing a change of pace with bread accompaniments – I could put pesto on anything! Great start to the meal.

Menu: Their entire menu was available to choose from, with *asterisks next to the dishes that were part of Restaurant Week. They hadn’t posted their R.W. menu on the web so I was quite anxious to see what they were offering, and I was pleasantly surprised! Jess & I couldn’t choose what antipasti we wanted to start with, so she ordered the Squash Pasta while I got the Salumi – we split them in half to share.

Food/Presentation:
Squash Pasta: plump homemade squash ravioli with fresh safe and toasted walnuts
Two raviolis side by side were topped with grated cheese. Thank goodness this was an app because I’m not sure how many of these I could have eaten. They were good but very full and rich, which made it perfect for a small first course.

Salumi: all-imported salumi sampler with panzanella, spiced oil, and aged Parmigiano
I really only ordered this because Jess was dying to taste it 🙂 My favorite of the meat was the salami as I found the others a bit too salty. Placed in the middle of the meats was the panzanella (which I had to Google and figured out it is “a salad of bread and tomatoes”). All in all not bad, but I couldn’t finish my 1/2 portion.

Bolognese Pasta: mountain-style Bolognese with homemade taglierini pasta
All my dreams came true with this entrée. The taglierini was presented in a tight round mound topped with greens (and parmesan once they grated it over my pasta). I have never tasted a pasta cooked this al dente and I couldn’t have been more pleased. The taglierini had great consistency and the meat/sauce was nicely proportioned. I can’t wait to dig into those leftovers!

Apple Tart: whipped cream, apple reduction
2 Restaurant Week meals in 2 nights with 2 Apple Tarts – but I’m not mad (I had the same dessert at Lumiere the night before)! Dough was flakey, whipped cream was heavy almost to the point of a softened ice cream, and the apple reduction made for a sweet and pretty sauce/decoration.

Bathroom: A single room/stall unisex restroom. Similar to the dining room décor, the bathroom’s colors were muted and soothing, with decorative wall paper that made you feel as if you were in someone’s home.

Wait Staff: Very kind and professional. At one point Ben’s cocktail slipped from his hand and landed on the table, somehow cracking in two clean pieces. Needless to say, the table and his pants were soaked and within 10 seconds our waiter and the manager came rushing over to help with the broken glass. They laid a few cloth napkins on the table in front of Ben and gave him extra to dry off with. We were well taken care of!

Overall: I get both a feeling of comfort and class from the dining room – large oversized mirrors hang on opposite walls, a chandelier dangles in the center of the room, the wall decorations could be something you’d find in your home. I really enjoyed my entrée and would love to try Mamma Maria again if the prices weren’t so high (entrees range from $26-$36, with some pasta options offered as small plates for almost ½ the price). They have 5 private dining areas upstairs and can accommodate up to 50 people. Perhaps a nice b-day dinner is in store…!
